Sir George Grey’s riding whip

Ref No: GMS 158
Date Added: 1958
Date Created: 1860

From July to September 1860, Sir George Grey, then Governor of the Cape Colony, escorted Prince Alfred on a tour of the colony by horse, wagon and train. Newspapers reported their "rapid progress" in great detail, describing the Prince on his return to Cape Town as "somewhat sunburnt by so much out of door existence". The whip was made by Swaine & Adeney of London and is inscribed "To Sir George Grey, in recollection of our pleasant rides in South Africa. September, 1860. Alfred".
