Wooden packing case

Date Added: c1886
Date Created: c1886

One of the wooden packing cases in which Sir George Grey’s books were transported from Kawau Island to the Auckland Free Public Library. In late 1886 Grey’s handyman Thomas Osborne gradually crated up his books and manuscripts. They were transferred by boat and cart to the new French Renaissance style library building on the corner of Wellesley and Coburg (now Kitchener) Street in central Auckland. Osborne noted in his diary "I stop and see the books placed in there [sic] new and permanent homes. go to bed rather tired".
