Ref No: Grey Collection: Ephemera
Date Created: 1887
This silk programme announces the ceremony for the opening of the Auckland Free Library on the 26 March, 1887.
The opening of the library fulfilled Grey’s vision. In 1883, having decided to donate thousands of volumes to the city, Grey gave a public address to Aucklanders. He spoke of building a collection ‘such as to compel persons to resort to Auckland who wish for information on a great variety of subjects’. He hoped that ‘by the choice of the material which we place in this Library, we can bring persons from every part of the earth to drink at sources of knowledge, which they can obtain in no other place’.
