Letter to Lady Grey (with translation)

Author: Ruta Te Rauparaha
Ref No: GNZMA 548
Date Added: 1853
Date Created: 22 March 1853

This letter is written to Lady Eliza Grey by Ruta (Ruth) Te Rauparaha, wife of Tamihana Te Rauparaha. Tamihana Te Rauparaha was the son of the masterly military tactician, Ngati Toa leader Te Rauparaha, who Grey had arrested in 1846.

The peaceful nature of Tamihana’s life was in marked contrast to Te Rauparaha’s. He was converted to Christianity as a young man, worked as an evangelist and was presented to Queen Victoria in June 1852. In his later years he farmed sheep at Foxton and Otaki.

Ruta Te Kapu married Tamihana Te Rauparaha on 11 September 1843. They adopted a son, Wiremu Kerei Kupapa. Ruta Te Rauparaha died in 1870 and is buried next to her husband in an unmarked grave in Otaki.
