A grammar and vocabulary of the language of New Zealand. Extracts

Author: Thomas Kendall
Ref No: GNZM 12a
Date Created: 1820

Amongst the medieval manuscripts, early printed books, Edinburgh Reviews, Bibles, oil paintings and curiosities (Kaffir shields and assegais) on Kawau, Grey also had a fine Māori language collection. Printed on sheets, John Kendall’s Grammar includes the alphabet, tables of syllables, dialogues and the Lord’s Prayer in Māori. They form a small portion of Grey’s printed Māori language collection. The sheets were used by Kendall and John King as reading and spelling primers for Māori students in the mission school at Rangihoua. According to the Minutes of the CMS Committee of Correspondence, 11 December 1820, 1,000 were printed. This is the only known surviving copy. Grey’s signature is evident on some of the cards.
