Kawau by D L Mundy
Author: Daniel Louis Mundy
Ref No: Photograph Album Collection no. 88
Date Created: 1870-1871
The Mundy Album is a collection of photographs of Kawau probably commissioned by Sir George Grey in 1870 or 1871. The photographer, Daniel Louis Mundy, was born in Wiltshire, and worked in Dunedin. He is best known for his brilliant landscape photographs which he took throughout New Zealand. He was probably personally acquainted with Sir George Grey.
Mundy’s series of views of Rotomahana, published in 1875 before the Tarawera Eruption, won a gold medal award from the emperor of Austria-Hungary, and Mundy is the only New Zealand photographer ever to receive imperial recognition.
